After the Ice Park, North Pole's Holidays Come Down to One December Weekend

Last December, Jill Armstrong learned that she and her husband Walt would be North Pole's 2026 Queen and King. She told the News-Miner she was "literally speechless." "I didn't know what to say," she said. "I've known some of the people who have been selected in the past. It's a humbling honor to be selected."

The crowning took place on a Sunday afternoon in a high school auditorium. There was no ice-sculpture park and no marquee attraction. The town's royalty was picked by the people who had held the title before them. That small, local ceremony is now the center of North Pole's holiday season. On December 5 and 6, 2026, most of the town's December lands on one weekend. Several dates around it run on calendars set somewhere else, and some of those deadlines pass before the bazaar tables go up.

The park that didn't come back

For years, Christmas in Ice filled the lot next to Santa Claus House with carved ice from December into January. In November 2019, the Anchorage Daily News reported that Interior Alaska had been too warm to harvest enough pond ice and that the park was canceled. The News-Miner's coverage quoted the park board's executive director, Keith Fye, and quoted Marlene Fogarty-Phillips of the North Pole Community Chamber of Commerce on what the event had meant to the community.

By December 2022, a visitor guide called the festival discontinued and said its Facebook page listed it as canceled indefinitely. No return has been announced for this winter. The event's old web address now shows unrelated casino content. If you are searching for 2026 ice park dates, nothing current exists.

Ice carving hasn't left the Interior. The World Ice Art Championships and the International Ice Art Classic are Fairbanks events. In North Pole itself, the December calendar now belongs to the Chamber.

Winterfest weekend, hour by hour

The North Pole Community Chamber of Commerce runs Winterfest. The 2026 event listing gives this schedule:

When What Where
Sat., Dec. 5, 10 AM to 6 PM Holiday Bazaar with local vendors, handmade gifts and holiday treats North Pole Plaza Mall
Sat., Dec. 5, 6 PM Fireworks, sponsored by Gorilla Fireworks and the North Pole Lions Club Above Hotel North Pole
Sun., Dec. 6, 2 PM Christmas Celebration with local musicians and students, a reading of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and the King & Queen Coronation North Pole High School Auditorium

The bazaar closes at 6 PM, the same hour the fireworks start, so you can go straight from the mall to the sky show. The 2024 Winterfest followed the same pattern: the bazaar at the mall, fireworks over Hotel North Pole on Saturday, and the program at the high school on Sunday. The Chamber has kept this format steady for several years.

Sunday's program is mostly local people. At the 2024 celebration, the North Pole High School Choir Ensemble led carols and Jeff Jacobson read "The Night Before Christmas." In 2025, children took the microphone to share holiday wisdom and tell reindeer jokes.

Who picks the King and Queen

According to the 2026 listing, the coronation has been a community tradition since 1977. Howard Rixie of the North Pole Chamber of Commerce explained the selection to the News-Miner last December:

"The Queen and King are ambassadors for our North Pole community. Nominations are gathered from the community, and final selection is from the past queens and kings."

So residents put names forward, and former royalty make the final pick. The honor is passed down by the people who have already done the job. Recent choices show what those past royals value. Jill Armstrong has worked with 4-H and youth programs for years, including helping at the Tanana Valley State Fair. Walt Armstrong retired from the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, where he taught and served as a coach and athletic director. He has led the local FFA program along with wrestling and 4-H.

They took over from Tefonie and Phillip Wyman, who once ran the Santaland RV Park and, as of the News-Miner's December 2024 coverage, led Summit Church in North Pole. The couple before them, Gail Chagnon and John Tobin, spent their year supporting children, military service members, veterans and first responders. They also helped nonprofits such as the Rescue Mission and visited American Legion Post 30 in Moose Creek.

The Chamber keeps a King nomination page. We could not confirm whether nominations for 2027 are open yet or when they close. If you have someone in mind, check with the Chamber before December 6.

At last year's celebration, Mayor Larry Terch put the town's identity this way:

"This is the town where Christmas lives year-round. It is the spirit of Christmas that has driven our community since 1950. It was a spirit of community, a spirit of survival. North Pole as a community hasn't changed; we have only evolved."

The deadlines that come first

Winterfest is the first weekend of December. The mail deadlines tied to the North Pole name mostly fall before it, and many of them are set outside town.

The USPS North Pole Postmark goes through Anchorage. To get a letter from Santa with the postmark, you write the reply yourself, put it in a stamped envelope, and mail that inside a larger envelope to North Pole Postmark, Postmaster, 4141 Postmark Dr., Anchorage, AK 99530-9998. The USPS instructions recommend mailing between November 23 and December 1. That window ends four days before the bazaar opens.

In order:

  1. Wednesday, Oct. 14: Santa Claus House keeps its usual 10 AM to 6 PM hours, but Santa's own schedule that day starts at noon.
  2. Through Sunday, Nov. 8: Santa is at Santa Claus House Wednesday through Sunday only. From Monday, Nov. 9, he is there every day through Dec. 31.
  3. Nov. 23 to Dec. 1: USPS recommends mailing North Pole Postmark requests during this window.
  4. Thursday, Nov. 26: Santa Claus House and Silver Bell Square are closed for Thanksgiving.
  5. Dec. 5 and 6: Winterfest.
  6. Thursday, Dec. 10: Santa Claus House's cutoff for personalized Santa letter orders shipped by standard U.S. mail.
  7. Dec. 25 to 27: Santa Claus House and Silver Bell Square close.

Santa Claus House is open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM through December 31, apart from those closures. Its personalized letters ship from North Pole with a "Santa's Official Mail" seal. It starts mailing Christmas letters in the last week of November, and orders placed after December 1 usually go out within three to five days. Across the lot, Silver Bell Square is in its off-season. From October 5 through December 31, only Destination North Pole and the park are open, and the dining and attractions are summer-only.

Where the letters used to go

North Pole also had a local system for answering children's letters, and it shows how much of the season has depended on volunteers. Santa's Mailbag answered mail sent to 1 Santa Claus Lane for years. It stopped in 2017. In March 2018, about two dozen volunteers worked through the backlog of 2017 letters. A successor nonprofit, Santa's Letters, took over. In 2019, Alaska's News Source reported it had received close to 5,000 letters that year, answered by volunteer "elves."

That 2019 report is the most recent coverage we found. We could not confirm whether Santa's Letters is still answering mail in 2026. For a guaranteed reply this year, the options with published 2026 schedules are the Anchorage postmark route and Santa Claus House.

One more date to confirm

The Candlelight Ceremony and community tree lighting have traditionally been held on the first Sunday of December, beside Santa Claus House. The City of North Pole lists candle lighting and a tree lighting as part of its December Winter Festival but has not posted a 2026 date. This year the first Sunday of December is December 6, the same day as the coronation at 2 PM. Until the City posts a time, plan for the Winterfest program and check before heading to the tree.
